Short history of the Umton Barvy Oil Paint:

Umton is an abbreviation of "Umělecký tón" which translates to "artistic tone" and "Barvy" translates to "colors"

The production of Umton Barvy oil paint has two origin stories, and it goes as follows:

Everything started in 1910 when Josef Stolovsky, an academic painter, started producing the "Stolo" line colors - it was a small family business that produced oil paint, watercolors and guache.

In 1948, when the communits came to power, the company was nationalized. All the machines used for production were sold to the state owned company TVAR and the Stolovsky family home, where production was taking place, was rented out to the same state owned company.

The Stolovskys were then employed by the state. After these changes, everything was produced and sold under the TVAR/STOLO name because the Stolovsky family managed to keep the STOLO brand name.

The second origin story of the Umton Barvy Oil Paint starts in 1945, when Richard Tapal started making oil paint and auxiliaries, under the brand name Tapal.

Just like with the Stolovsky family, in 1948 the communist regime nationalized TAPAL and Richard Tapal remained in the company as an employee, supervising the production of oil colors.

So just like that, the two competitors, are now part of the same state owned company.

In 1953 Richard Tapal leaves the company, but not before making sure that a competent team of people is left behind.

In 1962 the state owned company DILO is formed in Prague, which takes over all TVAR production lines. The products will change their name once again, only the Prague brach of the company keeps the name STOLO.

In 1982 guache production was moved to the Decin brach and in 1989 watercolor production was moved to the same branch.

The brach in Prague is shut down, and manufacturing is moved to Decin. The main reason was the Stolo family old age wich was making oil colors since 1910 and did not have any heirs.

After the fall of communism Czechoslovakia was dissolved and the Czech Republic was born, and so the legal nature of the DILO company remained unclear.

Because of this, in 1996, the company name was again changed into UMTON BARVY, and since then all products are branded this way.
